The Bike Geek is featured on Road Bike Action Magazine

So there I was on the throne checking out the Premier issue of Road Bike Action Magazine, when I turned to page 20 and:

OK, so they forgot the THE from the website address, but my calculators have been featured on other sites before like www.bikeculture.com so I’m pretty sure that it is my calculator that they are talking about. How about that!!!

Finding a riding buddy.

I usually meet my co-workers on the weekend to ride to the beach. But what if your co-workers don’t ride? The Internet is a great source to find and meet riding buddies.

For example, last week I posted on www.mtnbikeriders.com how I met RL thru www.SocalMTB.com so I would have someone to ride the Fullerton Loop with. Our buddy Henry Hsieh emailed me about a site where people post rides so they can meet and ride together. The site’s name is http://bike.meetup.com/, the Orange County group is http://bike.meetup.com/41.

MTB Group Ride

If you happen to be in the Lake Elsinore Area, RPM Cyclery also hosts group rides, check out their “rides and events page“. Scott Finch, the owner, is a super cool guy and a very experienced rider.

Also check your local Bike Shops, most of them host rides as well. The trick is to find a group that shares your same physical and experience level.

Cheap bikes are no bargain

January 26, 2007 By: admin Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

I was checking out Consumer Reports’ Bike recommendations and I found this tidbit:

Cheap bikes are not bargains

Wal-Mart and Toys “R” Us sell plenty of bikes from brands such as Huffy, Mongoose, Roadmaster, and Schwinn for $100 to $200. They seem like good deals, so why would we advise you to spend $300 or more for a bike in the Ratings?

Because you get what you pay for. Mass-market bikes have cheaper construction than higher-priced bikes and can weigh 7 or 8 pounds more. They come in only one size, so you’re not likely to get a great fit. And mass merchants can’t match bike shops for quality of assembly, expert advice, and service.

Adults should consider cheaper bikes from a department store only for the most casual use, and stick with a front-suspension model, which is likely to be better than a cheap full-suspension bike. You may want a mass-market bike for kids who will outgrow a bike quickly or toss it about.

Still, if your budget allows, we’d recommend that you buy one of the $300 comfort bikes in the Ratings. You’ll get a lot more bike for the buck.

In case you are wondering, here are CR’s top recommended Road Bikes:

2 Giant $1,800
3 Giant $1,000, CR Best Buy
6 Cannondale $1,050, CR Best Buy

Best wishes to everyone! I will continue where I left off. I will still ride to work, ride charity events and hit the dirt trails. As my focus now shifts to mtnbikeriders.com, I will not forget the faithful readers from CommuteByBike. I will do my best to keep this blog updated with some commuting stuff.

He’s such a Dick

Dick Pound
As the Landis case approaches it’s final destination, it has come to light that the French Lab made a mistake by mislabeling his urine. At this point, I still believe that Landis is innocent. What pisses me off is that Dick Pound, the head of WADA, is quick to critize and judge Landis as guilty. Wasn’t he the same dick that also believed L’Equipe’s accusations of Lance being doped? Maybe it’s time for a NEW Lab and a NEW head of WADA. The sport, and especifically the american cyclists don’t need a such a dick running the agency.

How to save $700 if you live in L.A.

November 08, 2006 By: admin Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

A recent study found that Los Angeles is Second in the Nation with the worst major roads and highways. Driving in LA will cost about $693 of car repairs due to potholes. So, in top of saving money in Gas when you ride your bike to work, you can add an additional $700 to that savings.

I guess that’s why I see so many people riding full suspension bikes on the roads of LA!

Yellow Card

November 08, 2006 By: admin Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

“This magnet was tossed onto your car by a cyclist who felt that you might have been driving in a way that could have endangered their life.
They chose to toss this magnetic note because it can neither damage your automobile, nor affix itself to rubber or glass and will therefore not affect your driving. It serves to warn you.

With thoughtful contemplation and reverence for humanity, we can adjust our behavior to allow for all people to live life.

This is a yellow card, let’s please not let things get to Red.”

This is an interesting way of letting motorists know that they have disrespected your rights as a cyclist. Here in LA, you most likely will get your ass beaten for tossing something at driver’s ‘precious’ cars. In case you don’t get the Yellow/Red card deal, its a Soccer thing.
